MIAM
Mediation
Information &
Assessment Meeting
An individual meeting to assess whether mediation suits your situation and explain how it works.
THE BASICS
What is a MIAM?
A MIAM is a short, individual meeting with an accredited family mediator. It’s usually the first step for anyone considering mediation — and, in most cases, a legal requirement before applying to court about children or finances.
-
Usually required before court
In most cases you must attend a MIAM before applying to court about children or finances.
-
With an accredited mediator
Only a Family Mediation Council accredited mediator can carry out a MIAM.
-
Just you, in confidence
Each of you meets the mediator separately — your partner isn’t there.
-
A signed form if needed
If mediation isn’t suitable, the mediator can sign the form you need for court.
Some people are exempt from attending a MIAM — for example, where there are concerns about domestic abuse or the matter is urgent. Emma can talk this through with you.
What to expect
-
What happens in it
The mediator meets you on your own. The benefits and process of mediation will be explained, and you can ask anything.
-
Does it commit me?
No. Mediation is voluntary, and you do not give up your right to go to court if it doesn’t lead to an agreement.
-
What happens after
If suitable, joint meetings follow. If not, the mediator can sign the form you need to apply to court.
